Your septic tank is designed to provide primary treatment of wastewater by capturing and restricting solids, grease, oil, fats, etc. from reaching the drain field.
This is the important first step in the process of sewage conditioning.
There are three types of systems:
This is the simplest form of an on-site wastewater system.
Comprised of a septic tank and a drain field, this system uses gravity to advance wastewater through the system.
Low-Pressure Dosing septic systems
Comprised of a septic tank, a pump tank, and a drain field. After wastewater is treated, it is then pumped into the drain field several times daily.
Aerobic systems introduce oxygen into the decomposition process.
Comprised of a septic tank, a pump tank/aerobic pretreatment, a filter module, and a drain field. After wastewater is treated, it is then pumped into the drain field.

Unlike septic systems, sewer lines carry water underground to a treatment plant.
Many homeowners find this option more convenient, as everything is typically operated by the city, leaving less for you to worry about when it comes to repairs! As they’re a collective water system that many people use, sewer systems may not be available in every area.
Septic systems are used in areas where city sewer systems aren't available. There are many types of septic systems with drain fields that are designed by professional engineers.
